Police search for Luwero man over death of 11-year-old stepson

LUWERO - Police in Luwero District are hunting for a man, who is accused of beating an 11-year-old stepson to death.
Police have since opened up a murder case against Nicholas Sekyazi. It is alleged that Sekyazi, a stepfather to Jeremiah Mayiga, beat the pupil of Kabukunga Primary School in Luwero to death after he found the boy playing with other children.
The boy reportedly died on August 18 at about 10:00pm in Kabukunga Village, Kamila Sub-county.
According to Savannah Regional Police spokesperson Sam Twineamazima, the boy and his siblings had been left under the care of their father, Sekyazi, after their mother, Joan Nalugo, left the home about two weeks earlier to attend to a sick relative.
Police said preliminary investigations indicate that Sekyazi found the children playing at about 4:00pm on August 18 and allegedly assaulted Mayiga with a stick.
Police said Sekyazi subsequently told people that the boy had fallen from a mango tree.
The matter was reported to police, who responded to the scene, documented it and recovered the stick allegedly used in the assault. The body was taken to Luwero Hospital for a postmortem examination.
Police said several witnesses have recorded statements as the search for Sekyazi continues.
Twineamazima said investigators are pursuing the suspect to have him arrested and brought to court.
The incident comes amid continued concerns over assault-related offences in the country.
According to the 2025 Police Annual Crime Report, 26,366 assault cases were reported, compared to 29,580 cases in 2024.
Of the cases reported in 2025, a total of 13,140 cases were submitted to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for perusal and legal guidance. A total of 8,397 cases were taken to court, resulting in 2,942 convictions.
The report indicated that 127 cases ended in acquittals, 1,002 cases were dismissed, while 4,326 cases were still undergoing trial. Another 11,836 cases remained under inquiry, while 6,130 cases were not proceeded with.
Police arrested and charged 9,637 suspects in connection with assault cases. They included 8,035 adult males, 1,192 adult females, 390 male juveniles and 20 female juveniles.
Of those charged, 3,410 were convicted and sentenced, 4,866 were still on trial, 136 were acquitted, and 1,225 were discharged.
Police have urged members of the public to report cases of domestic and child abuse early to prevent violence from escalating into deaths.
