KAMPALA - Members of the Rotary Club of Kanyanya (ROCK) demonstrated their commitment to community service by painting and installing three zebra crossings at strategic locations within Kanyanya in Kampala.
Under the leadership of the club president, Andrew Kulubya, the Rotarians collaborated with boda-boda riders, teachers and students to promote road safety in an area where pedestrians and motorists navigate increasingly busy roads.
At Hillview Secondary School, the team established a zebra crossing to serve both the school and the nearby St John Church of Uganda, two active institutions that experience significant pedestrian traffic daily.
The biggest beneficiaries, however, were pupils at Garfield Primary School along the Kanyanya–Kizanyiro road. Two crossings were provided—one at the primary school and another at its nursery section—to give young learners safer points at which to cross the busy road.

He noted that District Governor Gerald Obai had launched ENROSU (Enhancing Road Safety in Uganda) as District 9213’s flagship initiative for the 2026/2027 Rotary year.

The campaign focuses on reducing avoidable human errors, driver indiscipline and pedestrian vulnerability on Uganda’s roads.
For ROCK, the zebra crossings represent more than painted lines on the road. They are a practical intervention intended to protect some of the most vulnerable road users, particularly schoolchildren, while encouraging motorists and pedestrians to develop safer road-use habits.
Established three years ago, the Rotary Club of Kanyanya has grown into an active community service organisation with a growing record of grassroots interventions.
Its projects include cleaning Kikuubo and Kitara slums in Kanyanya, organising health camps, donating scholastic materials to disadvantaged schools and providing wheelchairs to people with disabilities as far away as Nagalama in Mukono District.
Through the zebra-crossing initiative, ROCK is once again demonstrating that meaningful community service does not always require massive investments. Sometimes, a simple intervention in the right place can save a life.
