Women who delay pregnancy for many years may also have an increased risk because the uterus is exposed to prolonged hormonal stimulation that encourages fibroid growth. “Heavy menstrual bleeding is not normal. Some women believe they are naturally heavy bleeders because they have always experienced excessive bleeding. However, if you are soaking several sanitary towels a day, bleeding for prolonged periods, or unable to carry out your daily activities because of your menstrual flow, it is important to seek medical evaluation,” Sekulima says.
Dr Sekulima explains that fibroids are influenced by female hormones, particularly estrogen and progesterone and several factors which increase a woman’s risk of developing them.
