Kabale University (KAB) dean of students Amos Tukamushaba says both the students and teaching staff are excited about Vision Group-organised Ultimate University Quiz Season Three.

He says students have been preparing for the games slated to begin on October 4, 2025, in Kampala city and has commended Vision Group for moving to the different campuses to interact with the students ahead of the competition.

“As Kabale University, we are delighted that you have embarked on the programme of moving to all the participating universities and spreading critical information about the intentions of the quiz,” he said as he welcomed the New Vision team during the orientation session at the university campus last week.

The competition, which aims to attract over 20 chartered universities across the country, is being sponsored by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA), and the major sponsor, the Bank of Uganda (BOU).

He also lauded UCC southwestern region office manager Jude Mulindwa, who attended the orientation session and addressed students, for the enriching messages he shared with them.

“Information is power. Many of us are not going back the same way we came; each one of us has learnt something good. I ask all students who attended to share what they have picked with their communities to spread the information”.

According to the dean, he was particularly touched by Mulindwa’s warning against cyberattacks and the risks of losing a SIM card.

“I have now known the challenges of losing a SIM card; everyone who attended learnt the repercussions and where one can go for immediate help,” Tukamushaba says.

“We have received the message from UCC with diligence, nostalgia and holding it with two hands so that it should not get away from us. I hope the attentive students are going to educate others who missed the opportunity because each member of our community owns a phone,” he says.

Golden opportunity for students

Tukamushaba added that the university is pleased with the Vision Group for coming along with the UCC representative, which has offered an open opportunity for students to apply for internship and further training after their courses.

“All students are receiving this offer with open hands. This is a golden opportunity for our students to get placements at the various UCC branches,” he says.

He added, “For the Ultimate University Quiz, we are well prepared, and we want this time to be more feasible than last time because we have prepared and we have the knowledge to enable us to perform better,” he explains, adding that the university has already set up a committee that will guide the students towards participating.

Mulindwa says they always use the orientation as an opportunity to communicate vital information, which they want the public to know so that they can help them to deal with digital safety.

E-waste challenges

This time, he says, UCC wants the public to learn about data protection and privacy, e-waste management and storage, digital safety, especially mobile money fraud, and cybersecurity.

“Our target is to let students know the law about data protection so that they understand their rights, obligations and how they can get redress,” he stated.

He added that UCC is working on the e-waste management project to avoid littering dangerous electronic waste, which he says poses a big risk to human health.

Already, he says, UCC has started by placing collection bins at their office in Kampala, Mukono and Wakiso.

“This is a pilot study, but we will expand the project to cover the whole country, and we will continue to spread the message. Please support UCC by bringing your waste,” he says.

“This Ultimate University Quiz is about general knowledge; it enables you to carry out your research and become more knowledgeable beyond what you learn within the lecture room”.

“It also exposes you to the world beyond the education setting and experience,” says Max Adii, the Vision Group’s Ultimate University Quiz project lead.

It also promotes a spirit of competitiveness among students and working together as a team.

“As university students, you get to know one another when you converge from various universities, get closer to other institutions, mingle with our sponsors and get a one-on-one chat with them. In today’s world, you need that sort of professional connection,” he says, adding that many times students ask sponsors questions on how they have made it in life so that they can pick a lesson.
