ISBAT University triumphs over Uganda Martyrs in university quiz

From the moment the first buzzer sounded, the ISBAT team asserted control. Quiz mistress Lydia Lakwonyero’s opening instruction, “I ask you a question, you get it correct, 10 points”, barely finished before ISBAT’s quick hands and steady voices began to convert opportunities into score.

ISBAT University produced a largely untroubled display to beat Uganda Martyrs University 540–170 in Game Seven of the Ultimate University Quiz Season Three on Saturday evening, leaving few doubts about which side was best prepared on the night.

In Round One (Science), ISBAT repeatedly hit the target: when asked, “What does a Geiger counter measure?” the team answered crisply, “Radiation,” and the scoreboard reflected it.

Moments later, ISBAT’s captain supplied “Copernicus” after Uganda Martyrs stumbled on who first proposed a heliocentric model.

Uganda Martyrs had its bright moments. A member confidently gave “Albert Einstein” when asked which Nobel laureate proved the theory of relativity, and another answered “Meiosis” on cell division.

But on more than one occasion, hesitation cost them. Their initial reply of “Galileo” to the heliocentric question was ruled incorrect, and ISBAT seized the rebound.

The calm on stage translated into points: ISBAT University closed the first round with a significant lead, 150 to Uganda Martyrs’ 50.

Round Two, themed World History, showcased similar dynamics. Uganda Martyrs University recovered briefly, when asked about the 14th-century pandemic, a team member tried before time expired; ISBAT promptly filled the silence with “The Bubonic Plague.”

ISBAT continued to capitalise on missed opportunities: they supplied “Margaret Thatcher” for Britain’s first female prime minister, “New Amsterdam” for New York’s original name, and “Augustus Caesar” as Rome’s first emperor. Each correct answer widened the gap.

The third round (Literature and Sports) further offered some flashpoints. Uganda Martyrs nailed “Polo” for equestrian sport and correctly identified “Atlanta” as the 1996 Olympics host, but they repeatedly ran out of time on multi-part prompts.

ISBAT University, in contrast, kept its composure under the clock, delivering “Titan” when asked which moon of Saturn has a methane cycle and “Pangaea” for the most recent supercontinent.

The decisive phase arrived in the final round, where each team faced ten medical-branch questions in succession. ISBAT University again demonstrated steadiness: “Cardiology,” “Dentistry,” “Dermatology,” and “Endocrinology” came in orderly succession from the team. Uganda Martyrs answered strongly too, “Neurology,” “Obstetrics,” and “Oncology” were correctly called, but the format, which presented rapid ten-question blocks to each team, favoured the side that could maintain a streak.

ISBAT University did, and the scoreboard closed at an emphatic 540 to 170.

Quiz mistress Lakwonyero supplied a measured post-match summary: “A very tough team. Congratulations, ISBAT. Uganda Martyrs, thank you for putting on a fight.”
