Bank of Uganda (BOU) governor Michael Atingi-Ego has urged universities across the country to join the Vision Group-led Ultimate University Quiz, a national academic competition.
Speaking during the official launch of the competition's third season at the BOU offices in Kampala city on September 24, 2025, Atingi-Ego described the quiz as a powerful platform to build Uganda’s next generation of critical thinkers and leaders.
“This is more than just a quiz—it’s a crucible for critical thinking, a laboratory of leadership, and a workshop of wisdom,” he said.
The quiz, which aims to attract over 20 chartered universities, is sponsored by BOU (platinum), the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA), Parliament and Hariss International. Other sponsors are expected to join the challenge.

Atingi-Ego emphasised the quiz’s role in nurturing financial literacy, innovation and collaboration skills vital for national development.
“These are the same challenges you’ll face in boardrooms and policy chambers. This quiz simulates real-world decision-making under pressure,” he added.
Parliament senior information officer Ibrahim Manzil said competition aligns with the qualities needed in legislative work, including quick thinking, clarity, and subject mastery.
“There’s no formal training for MPs. Competitions like this sharpen the attributes of effective lawmakers,” he said.
Manzil added that the aptitude of the quiz also broadens knowledge on banking, environment, and other topics, which is critical in Parliament.

“I have the commitment of the Director to always support this activity, and we look forward to the next and next competitions, and as students continue participating even when they don’t make it, they should know they already win by being on this stage and will shine in the future".
Sustainable change
NEMA environment assessment officer Josephine Tushabe called the quiz a tool for building youth-led sustainability efforts.
“By empowering young people with this knowledge and giving a platform like this, we are confident that solutions will emerge from this very generation,” she said.
She urged students to treat it as a launchpad for advocacy on issues like climate change and pollution.
“Use this opportunity to learn, and become advocates for sustainability in Uganda to inspire action, challenge harmful practices and influence positive change.”

Innovation
Comfort Ahumuza, the public relations officer at Hariss International, praised the quiz for fostering innovation, teamwork, and excellence.
“It is our honour to sponsor this challenge and we believe that investing in young minds is investing in our nation’s future,” she said.
Ahumuza praised the quiz for uniting Uganda’s most promising university students and giving them a stage to showcase qualities essential for modern success.
“The quiz brings together talented students from across the country to showcase teamwork and creativity, qualities we value deeply as innovative food and Beverage Company,” she added.
National impact
Since its launch in 2023 with 16 universities, the quiz has expanded in reach and popularity.
Vision Group CEO Don Wanyama said interest is soaring, with over 20 institutions set to compete this season.

“We could have 50 institutions on board if we opened it up, but we want to grow it organically,” Wanyama noted.
The competition has also gained significant traction online, with over 7.3 billion impressions and more than 212,000 digital posts last season, testament to its broad appeal among youth and the general public.

“This isn’t just a show, it’s a national movement,” Wanyama said.
He applauded all the sponsors for their continued support of the quiz since its inception, which has been invaluable in shaping it into the most exciting academic platforms in the country.
“This competition nurtures confidence, and it contributes to raising well-informed graduates, ready to lead and excel in the marketplace and also provides a unique interactive platform for students to learn about several things while exploring opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom.”
Vision Group is committed to broadcasting the quiz widely across its platforms starting October 4th, culminating in a grand finale on November 27th.
