"A degree is a mere qualification document, but not employment assurance; you can only be hired by people and in most cases those who know you and your potential," Kukunda said.

KAMPALA - Makerere University students have been urged to engage in valuable and strategic connections if they are to tap into available career opportunities during and after their academic journey.

Charlotte Kukunda, the country manager of Association Of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Uganda, said networking can provide numerous advantages for students and educators alike.

She said that by connecting with faculty, fellow students, and industry professionals, individuals can gain access to valuable resources, including research opportunities and collaborative projects.

Kukunda was speaking at a career workshop organized by Makerere University College of Business and Management Sciences in collaboration with ACCA on Tuesday (April 1).

This was at the Yusuf Lule Auditorium at Makerere's main campus in Kampala.
Kukunda urged learners to value and embrace the benefits of networking so as to realize their employment dreams.

"A degree is a mere qualification document, but not employment assurance; you can only be hired by people and in most cases those who know you and your potential," she said.

"Use your time at campus to broaden your network base so as you make it easy after studies.

She added, "Scholars who are connected and collaborative enhance their chances of progressing further and faster in their academic careers."

During the workshop, the top first-class students who graduated in January 2025 were honoured and recognized, celebrating their achievements and providing them with networking opportunities.

Additionally, the event aimed at offering comprehensive insights into career opportunities and professional development paths within the accounting and finance sectors.

Speaking at the same event,  Dr Eric Nzibonera, the head of the accounting and finance department at Makerere University, called on learners to put into practice what they learn if they are to thrive.
