The Ministry of Education and Sports has issued new guidelines for international schools, setting minimum standards for infrastructure, staffing, child protection, health and safety, curriculum delivery and financial management.
The guidelines, contained in the Basic Requirements and Minimum Standards for International Schools (BRMS-IS), require private institutions offering foreign curricula from early childhood to secondary level to meet a 15-point compliance checklist before they can obtain and retain an operational licence.
The framework is anchored in the Education Act, 2008, and is intended to strengthen regulation of international schools, eliminate unregulated operators and ensure institutions comply with Uganda's legal requirements while maintaining international education standards.

He added that schools must meet the prescribed standards before being licensed and maintain compliance throughout their operation.
The guidelines were developed by the Directorate of Education Standards.
