A total of 3,349 learners and 83 teachers are expected to benefit from improved access to digital education following the refurbishment of school facilities in Uganda.

The intervention, handed over on October 20, 2026, includes 40 computers, internet connectivity, classroom renovations and improvements to sanitation and rainwater harvesting facilities.

The facilities were provided to Arua Public Primary School in Arua City, Kibeedi Primary School in Kibaale District, Buremba Senior Secondary School in Kazo District and Kasaana I Primary School in Sheema District under the Adopt A School Programme.

Speaking during the handover, Airtel Uganda Managing Director Soumendra Sahu said children should have equal opportunities to learn and develop their potential regardless of their backgrounds.

“A child’s potential should never be limited by where they are born, where they go to school, or the opportunities available around them. Every child deserves a fair chance to learn, dream, and build a better future,” Sahu said.

The programme, implemented by Airtel Uganda through the Airtel Africa Foundation, brings the number of schools supported under the initiative to nine.

Digital learning opportunities

The upgraded computer rooms are expected to help learners access online educational materials, conduct research and develop digital literacy skills.

Internet connectivity could also enable teachers to access additional teaching resources and introduce technology-based activities into classroom instruction.

Sahu said the investment was intended to equip young people with the tools needed to participate in an increasingly digital world.

“For us at Airtel Uganda, investing in education means giving young people the tools to participate in an increasingly digital world,” he said.

However, the benefits of the facilities will depend on reliable internet access, proper maintenance of the computers and teachers’ ability to integrate technology into lessons.

Programme expands beyond libraries

The Adopt A School Programme was launched in November 2011 in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Sports, initially focusing on school libraries and essential learning infrastructure.

It has since expanded to include digital education, with the aim of giving learners greater access to technology and educational resources.

The latest intervention builds on nearly 15 years of support for schools and communities.

Access to computers and the internet can expose learners to information beyond textbooks and traditional classroom materials while helping them acquire skills increasingly relevant to education and employment.

Sustaining these benefits will require the schools to keep the equipment functional, maintain internet connectivity and ensure learners regularly use the facilities for educational purposes.
