Uganda Martyrs University, Nkozi graduates first cohort of lawyers

UMU’s 29th graduation and 30th anniversary has come with the commissioning of the faculty of law building that will facilitate law students.

Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) has graduated its first cohort of lawyers today (Wednesday, October 18, 2023)

The first cohort at UMU consists of 26 lawyers and according to the Vice Chancellor, Patrick Kyamanywa, this is one of the highlights of the Catholic-based institution as it marks 30 years of existence and celebrates its 29th graduation ceremony.

“We are having our first ever cohort of lawyers graduating today October 18 2023 as the institution marks 30 years. This first cohort consists of 26 law students that will graduate,” Kyamanywa told New Vision in an exclusive interview on Wednesday.

Additionally, UMU’s 29th graduation and 30th anniversary has come with the commissioning of the faculty of law building that will facilitate law students. The building was commissioned during the graduation ceremony.

“The establishment of the law school faculty is a remarkable achievement amid the current legal challenges in the country. The law school program didn't have a home so commissioning of this faculty on this day is very significant for us because it will mark the birth of the faculty of law at Uganda Martyrs,” Kyamanywa explained.

Kyamanywa therefore commended Prof. Frederick Juuko, the dean of the Faculty of Law at UMU for the focus and excellence that has delivered a fine group of lawyers.

Over 1600 graduate

A total of 1,693 students have graduated from Uganda Martyrs University.

“We are proud to be graduating 1,693 from nine faculties, seven campuses, and two schools. I congratulate you on enduring the training and its various hurdles including the interruption by the covid 19 pandemic. You have challenged yourselves, been bold and persistent, and made several sacrifices along the way,” VC Kyamanywa stated.

The vice chancellor said the institution will be graduating engineers in a few years since the engineering faculty was accredited by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE).

Uganda Martyrs University marks 30 years on October 18 2023 since its inception in 1993. The Catholic-based university that started with two faculties and 80 students that is; the faculty of business management and that of accounting, currently has over 155 programmes, over 4,000 students, and 30,000 alumni.

Uganda Martyrs University is a private University affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church in Uganda. The University is owned by the Episcopal Conference of the Catholic Bishops of Uganda and currently has eight branches across the country with the main campus in Nkozi.
