Wampeewo Ntakke Secondary School from Uganda have etched their name into the history of school scrabble after clinching the girls' title at both the national and East African levels.

The remarkable achievement was attained at the 2026 Federation of East Africa Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) Games in Morogoro, Tanzania, where Wampeewo successfully asserted their dominance and became the first Ugandan team so far to pocket a gold medal and emerge as champions in the girls' scrabble section on Monday.

Ntakke had already established themselves as the girls' scrabble leading force during the recently concluded USSSA National Ball Games II and Athletics girls' title in Gulu city, as has again happened at the regional championship.

Wampeewo (UGA) won six and lost two of their fourteen matches to score 17 points. Seroma (UGA) took second position with 10 points, seeing off Kahuhia (KEN) who settled for third position with 9 points.

In the boys' category, Utumishike (KEN) won gold, while silver and bronze went to Jabuloni and Ntare SS, both from Uganda.

"Our major focus as we left Uganda for this noble regional tournament was to win a double-double for the girls' and boys' categories, which has not materialised for now, but we need to thank God, who has enabled us to win a gold medal in the girls' category, which is not easy," said Calvin Ntumwa, head coach of Wampeewo Ntakke SS.

According to Ntumwa, the school's next target is focused on ensuring that Uganda again wins a medal in chess, where his girls are also doing very well.

"So far, so good on the side of Ntakke chess girls' side. We have managed to beat Iganga (UGA) 3-1, draw with St Mary Kitovu (UGA) 2-2, and defeat Mongola SS (KEN) and Arusha (TZ) 4-0 to qualify for the semifinals in the championship," narrated Ntumwa.
