Uganda has reclaimed sixth place in the World Netball rankings, securing automatic qualification for the 2027 Netball World Cup in Sydney, Australia.
“We have qualified for the World Cup in Sydney, Australia,” confirmed Ucanda.
“That is why we had to look for the sh95m to allow us to play and attend that tournament.”
This achievement would not have been possible without Uganda’s participation in the Celtic Cup, which proved crucial in boosting their ranking.
World Netball President Dame Liz Nicholl DBE congratulated the first six teams to qualify.
“This is a very special moment for the athletes, support teams, and their national federations. It is a testament to your hard work, consistent performances, and world-class abilities. To have all five of our Regions once again represented in the top six of the World Netball World Rankings highlights the global and competitive nature of our growing sport, of which I am very proud,” she said.
The She Cranes now turn their attention to the upcoming Africa Cup, where they will aim to consolidate their sixth-place ranking despite the absence of star shooter Mary Nuba. Training resumed today, with players undergoing assessments ahead of the tournament.
Uganda left out several capable players during the Celtic Cup, including Mercy Batamuliza (GA/WA), Norah Lunkuse (WA/C), and Alice Isoto (GS).
In Nuba’s absence, coach Rashid Mubiru may call upon Isoto to step in. Namukose, who had limited minutes in the Celtic Cup, could be given more responsibility, while Shadia Nassanga offers another shooting option that may prompt Batamuliza’s return to the squad.
Nanyonga, who missed the Celtic Cup, is expected to rejoin the team, and Lunkuse could help ease the workload of Margaret Baagala in midfield.
Uganda’s qualification marks a significant milestone, but the Africa Cup will be a crucial test of depth and resilience as the She Cranes prepare for the global stage.
