FUFA Women Elite League results
Royal Dreamers 3 UCU 1
She Kasese 0 St Noa 2
Royal Dreamers Women's Football Club pulled off one of the biggest surprises in the FUFA Women Elite League with a 3-1 home win over Uganda Christian University (UCU) in an Elizabeth Group league game played on Sunday at Bushenyi Stadium.
The league debutantes, who had only played one season in the Western Region League before their promotion to this second tier of local women's football, initially struggled with losses to Kawempe B and St Noa.
However, the players’ confidence grew with each game, and in their final match of the first round on Sunday, UCU fell prey to their determined pursuit.
Goals from Claire Nahuriira, Lucky Ampaire, and Poreen Akankwatsa sent the enthusiastic crowd into wild cheers.
“We had challenges with students, especially those doing their final course exams, which is why we started on a bad note because we could not have a full team. This win comes at the right time and against a big team, and it will give them much more self-confidence and desire for more. Our target is to play in the same league next season as we prepare to gear up for top league promotion,” said Royals team manager William Bwahwayo.
The win pushed the Bushenyi-based side to safety in 5th position with 6 points, just one point above 6th-placed Isra Academy and two points ahead of bottom-side She Kasese. UCU remains 3rd with 9 points from 6 games, one point behind Kawempe Moslem.
Runaway leaders St Noa beat She Kasese 2-0 away to finish the first round with maximum points (18) as the league goes into recess.
