Over the past three seasons, Kampala Queens has established itself as one of the giants of women’s club football in the country.

This success is attributed to significant investments in player recruitment, leading to high expectations for the head coach to secure the league title each season and earn the sole ticket to the CAF Women’s Champions League Cecafa zonal qualifiers.

Last season, the Queens of Soccer were unable to defend their 2022/2023 league title, finishing second behind rivals Kawempe Muslim Ladies, who defeated them in both home and away matches. Their hopes of ending the campaign with a trophy were dashed by second-tier side She Corporate, who eliminated them from the FUFA Women Super Cup at their home ground in Lugogo.

As the 2024/2025 campaign kicks off on Friday at Lugogo, where they host Vipers SC-affiliated Wakiso Hills, captain Shamirah Nalugya expresses confidence in their readiness to fight for the league title. “It is going to be a different season compared to the previous one. We are going to take every game seriously, play well, entertain our fans, and definitely fight for the league,” said Nalugya.

The club has bolstered its squad with several new signings, including Moureen Kimono, Kemiyati Naigaga, Shakirah Nankwanga, Zaituni Namaganda, Miriam Nakayiwa, Shamusa Najjuma, Sumayah Nalumu, Sumaya Namulondo, and Peace Muduwa.

On Saturday, at the NEC coffee grounds in Bugolobi, Uganda Martyrs Lubaga will host the 2022 champions She Corporate, who were promoted back to the top flight last season. At Olila grounds in Soroti, newly promoted sides Olila High School and debutants Amus College will face off in the first Eastern derby.

Lady Doves and newly promoted Tooro Queens will meet at Katusabe grounds in Masindi for the first Rwenzori derby of the season. Defending champions Kawempe, fresh from the CAF Women’s Champions in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where they lost the qualifying final to hosts CBE, will begin their title defense on Sunday at home against Rines SS.

Lastly, Makerere University and She Maroons will clash at the Makerere Arena. This season, the league has expanded from 10 to 12 teams, and the naming rights have changed to the Finance Trust FUFA Women Super League. Finance Trust Bank recently injected UGX 2 billion into both the FUFA Women Super League and FUFA Women Elite League, securing the naming rights.
