Liverpool FC legend Steve McManaman will be the chief guest at this year’s Standard Chartered Cup.

The tournament returns after three years due to Covid-19 which disrupted sports activities.

About 40 teams are expected to take part in the tournament. 30 teams have already confirmed participation.

The winning team is slated to have an all-expense paid trip to Anfield, Liverpool FC's home ground.

New Vision football team coach Shaffik Ssenoga has high hopes for his team to win the tournament that kicks off this Saturday at the MTN Omondi Stadium in Lugogo.

“I am fielding a very strong team and working towards winning the tournament to merit the opportunity of visiting Anfield,” Ssenoga said on Thursday at Standard Chartered Bank's head offices in Kampala.

The 30 companies were drawn into eight groups of five teams each to play against one another on Saturday.

New Vision is in Group C with Steel and Tube, Nation Media 1, Cipla & Quality Chemicals, and Uganda Breweries

The format of play will require all the teams to play a 10-minute game with each half for five minutes.

Margaret Kigozi, the head of lending and Marketing at Standard Chartered Bank called upon other companies to register for the tournament and merit an opportunity to travel to Anfield.

“We gladly welcome every company interested in taking part in this year’s Standard Chartered Cup to register, come have fun, and also market themselves through sports.”

Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) president Moses Lubega, and Uganda Liverpool supporters Fans president Mark Mponye were among other people who were in attendance at the event.
