The return of the Standard Chartered Cup this year will not only favour Ugandan football fans to get the opportunity of an exciting futsal tournament but also get to meet Liverpool legend, Steve McManaman.

McManaman is slated to grace the 6th edition of the popular futsal tournament named Standard Chartered Cup that will be played at Lugogo Phillip Omondi Stadium on October 7.

The 2023 Standard Chartered Cup is an international 5 aside football tournament that offers football fans a money can’t buy opportunity to travel to the UK to attend an English Premier League match, benefit from a professional training session with the club legends and coaches at the Liverpool FC academy before attending a match viewing session of a chosen premier league match involving Liverpool.

Announcing the tournament at a press conference held at the Bank’s headquarters at Speke Road, the Head of Corporate Affairs, brand and marketing, Margaret Kigozi Namulindwa said that they have called on 40 corporate teams specifically their customers to register for the tournament on a first come entry at a free cost.

The teams will compete at Lugogo on September 7 and the winner will be eligible to travel to the UK.

“The bank will have all expenses paid for a team of five players and two officials. This is the sixth time it is being held in Uganda, having been successfully launched in 2015 and run until 2019 when it was halted due to the pandemic,” she noted.

While addressing journalists at a press conference, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of Standard Chartered, Kelvin Musana said that the partnership between the global bank and Liverpool FC has enabled them to work together to create and deliver unique experiences across the globe.

Since the inception of the program, five Uganda teams have benefited including Coca-Cola, CAA, and Cipla have won the tournament before.

“But we decided that if a team ever won the tournament before and travelled to the UK, it would not get the opportunity even if they won again. This is intended to allow opportunity to others,” Kigozi noted.

Edgars Youth Programme will be handling the technical aspects of the SC Cup futsal tournament having managed it from inception in 2015.

“For fairness and professionalism, we shall verify players to ensure no professionals in the super and big league participate. 

The registration deadline is September 29 and draws to be done on October 4.
