National team woodball trials get underway at MUBS

Seven players from each gender are needed to join the 2023 Most Valuable players Joyce Nalubega and Thomas Khedi to form the national team for the 9th Woodball World Cup in Shaoxing China in October.

The battleline has been drawn and woodball players are out for any point at stake as the second round of the national team woodball trials get underway at Makerere University Business School (MUBS) on Sunday.

Seven players from each gender are needed to join the 2023 Most Valuable players Joyce Nalubega and Thomas Khedi to form the national team for the 9th Woodball World Cup in Shaoxing, China in October.

32 players of which sixteen are men are battling it out for the seven slots at stake in each category and the race in the second round today is set to be stiffer than before.

The players will be battling it out in 36 fairways at MUBS and target maximum points to keep in the top seven that are needed.

In the Sunday trials last week Prisons’ Crescent Rwanyombya was on fire playing 54, 54,58 in 36 fairways to tally 166 strokes to sit on top of the table.

Teammate Daniel Apita (58,61,47) totalling 168 came second and Trevor Oming (174), followed while outgoing team captain Onesmus Atamba (175) is in fourth position.

Tonny Ssekyene (177) Derick Nkunda (180), and then Darry Giles Amanyire came seventh with 188 strokes.

However, they face stiff challenges from Prisons’ Samson Rugongeza, (191), Edson Tumwine of UNIK (191), Robert Kikulwe of Makerere University (189), Jackson Masiga (194), Abednego Okello (193) and Robert Mutiibwa of MUBS (197).

Meanwhile, in the women category, Joan Mukoova (178 strokes), Jackie Naula (189), Sanyu Mirembe (196), Sophia Namuddu (201), Mary Namara (202), Alverah Mukamarinda (204), Lilian Zawedde (206) Rose Nabagala (209) and Nalwoga  Noeline (209)  and Joan Nahurira, Dorah Nabbale are all targeting the 7 slots at stake.
