Students at Mt. St. Mary’s College Namagunga brought electrifying energy over the weekend as they cheered on their housemates during the school’s inter-house athletics competition.
Four houses—Vega, Orion, Triton, and Aquila, competed in various events, including the 5000m, 3000m, and sprint races. Mich Prudence Shivan of Vega House emerged as the long-distance queen, dominating both the 5000m and 3000m categories.
Vega continued their streak in short sprints, with Rinah Mirembe claiming victory in both the 100m and 200m races. Aquila’s Michelle Aujo showcased her endurance by winning both the 1500m and 800m events.
Beyond athletics, students participated in a wide array of sports including hockey, football, lacrosse, cycling, high jump, cricket, and dancing. Indoor and court games such as chess, basketball, volleyball, lawn tennis, badminton, and table tennis were also part of the showcase.
Games teacher Mr. Henry Kayongo praised the students for their resilience, especially during an unexpected downpour. “We’ve just returned from ball games, and you can see our ambassadors are competing at a high level. We’ll keep using these events to identify and nurture talent,” he said.
Winners were awarded medals, certificates, and trophies presented by headmistress Sister Regina Nabawanuka, who emphasized the role of sports in academic development.
“Students who participate in games tend to be sharper and more agile thinkers, qualities shaped by the competitive nature of sports,” she noted.
Sister Nabawanuka also highlighted the relevance of co-curricular activities in today’s curriculum, encouraging students to embrace sports as a way of life and a path to staying healthy.
