The adage "One who laughs last laughs best" finds its embodiment in the journey of Fred Mugerwa, the resilient head coach of the She Cranes.

A pivotal moment stamped in history, Mugerwa steered the She Cranes to a triumphant fifth-place finish at the 2023 Netball World Cup, securing a historic victory for the team in the world and the continent of Africa. This milestone marked the pinnacle of achievement since their inaugural appearance in the Netball World Cup back in 1979.

Fred Mugerwa, an eminent figure in Ugandan netball, leads KCCA at the club level, boasting a remarkable wealth of experience within the sport. Yet, despite his proven expertise, he has grappled with the difficult task of convincing the netball community and the nation at large of his exceptional coaching skills. The shadow of his past looms large, stemming from his untimely dismissal as head coach of the She Cranes after successfully qualifying the team for the 2015 Netball World Cup. This setback, haunting him as a perceived failure in the public eye, served as a poignant reminder of the fragility of success.

In a turn of fate, the year 2021 brought a lifeline in the form of a contract extended by Uganda Netball Federation's president, Sarah Babirye Kityo. Mugerwa seized this opportunity as a chance for redemption, a canvas upon which to paint the unfulfilled aspirations of his coaching career.

The journey to redemption commenced with a resounding victory, as Mugerwa guided his charges to triumph in the Pent Series Tournament held in Windhoek, Namibia in 2021. That same year bore witness to another triumph, with the She Cranes securing an impressive second-place finish in the fiercely contested Africa Netball Championships.

As his two-year contract approaches its culmination in November of this year, Mugerwa finds himself at a crossroads, awaiting the verdict of his fate. "If they are focused, they will renew my contract, if they are not they will not renew it. I stand proud, content in the knowledge that I have fulfilled my responsibilities to the utmost," Mugerwa eloquently expressed.

Mugerwa's narrative is a testament to the human spirit's indomitable ability to rise above adversity. A story of resilience, redemption, and the pursuit of excellence in the face of trials, it stands as a testament to the fact that, sometimes, the one who perseveres and overcomes emerges as the true victor, ready to embrace the joy of well-earned laughter.
