The question of who will win the 2023/2024 Uganda Premier League season title has not been answered yet but one thing is for certain, Kitara Football Club is fueling the title charge.

The title challenge has now shifted from the three contenders to five. Who would have thought, that in the last quarter of the season, three underdogs would be toppling the big guns for the cake?

Kitara, BUL, and NEC are leading the table standings. Kitara holds on to the top spot with 43 points followed by BUL on 39 and NEC in third with 37 points after 21 games played so far.

Do not be deceived by the positions and points of the aforementioned teams except for Kitara who seem safe for now, but BUL and NEC know that is not yet over and there will be more twists and turns considering that Sports Club Villa and Vipers on 37 and 36 points in the fourth and fifth placement respectively, have two games in hand.

While the season is on hold because of the international break, Vipers have to reflect on their 1-0  defeat to their arch-rivals KCCA on Friday last week in front of their home crowd at ST Mary’s Kitende.

The Venoms missed out on a huge opportunity to move within a point behind Kitara, the table leaders, which would have changed the dynamic of the title chase.

After thrashing Wakiso Giants 4-0 in the previous game before KCCA, Vipers had shown that they have what it takes to snatch the title from Kitara who are favorites but that defeat to KCCA leaves them out of the top four even with fixtures in hand.

Vipers are not perfectly placed in the very sense of the game, they might have the depth and quality players to navigate the remaining games but their managerial inconsistencies and administration wobbles might haunt them this season.

Determining who should win the title is no cakewalk for any of the five teams but Kitara has shown intentionality for the big prize and they head the table on merit.

Even after silencing URA FC 3-0 at their home in Masindi, a game that had various facets to it, Kitara still does not want to be considered a title favorite but we all know they deserve to enjoy this run a little bit.

In a race in which margins are so slim, fluctuations in performance levels will be decisive for the five teams.
