Vipers captain Milton Kariisa has blamed Tuesday's goalless draw at Wankulukuku with SC Villa on their inability to convert the many chances they got in that match.

"To me, we were unlucky not to win because we were the better team, and had the best chances to score but that is football, it was not our day," said Kariisa.

On failing to score, Kariisa called upon his teammates to be more clinical in front of the goal because it is through scoring and defending well that they will win their remaining games.

"We need to be sharper in front of the opponent's goal because all our next games are must-win in this title race," he added.

Kariisa should have bagged a brace in the first half but his decision-making whenever he got in the shooting positions let him down.

Substitutes Yunus Sentamu and Fazil Tumwine, each had big opportunities late in the second half to win the game for Vipers but failed to convert.

Victory for Vipers on Tuesday would have taken them level on 44 points with league leaders Kitara FC but having failed to do so, they stayed third on 42 points.

This was the first match for interim head coach Richard Wasswa and his assistant Fred Muhumuza in charge of Vipers.

The two were elevated to these positions by the club on Monday after sacking Charles Mbabazi.

On the other hand, this share of spoils also suffocated Villa's title ambitions, they too had an opportunity to go level on points with second-placed BUL (43 points) and just one point behind Kitara had they beaten Vipers.

They are now fourth on the table with 41 points.

Villa too like Vipers should blame themselves for sharing spoils in this match because they had chances to score and wasted them.

Patrick Kakande was set up by substitute Abasi Kyeyune late in stoppage time and all he needed was a simple tap-in to win the match but he fired his efforts emphatically wide.

Kakande apologised to Villa fans and his teammates for wasting that chance and promised to do better next time.

"I know that I should have done better in such a position, but I failed to score, I apologise to the fans and my teammates, I promise to do better next time," noted Kakande.

This was one of the two matches both teams had in hand on Kitara and BUL who have played a game more than these two.

It was supposed to be played at the start of last month but due to the All-Africa Games, it was postponed because of players on either side who were on national duty with the Uganda Hippos.

This match was also graced by the Katikkiro of Buganda Charles Peter Mayiga, a staunch Villa fan.

Celebrities too were spotted in the stands led by Eddy Kenzo, and Mathias Walukagga, among others.

Uganda Cranes coach Paul Put and his assistant Sam Ssimbwa too watched this contest.
