BOSTON — Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann called for self-reflection after his side was eliminated from the FIFA World Cup in the round of 32 on Monday, losing 4-3 on penalties to Paraguay.

Kai Havertz, whose opening penalty in the shootout was saved, admitted that Germany fell short despite having played well in the tournament.

"During the tournament, we really gave it our all," Havertz said. "I don't think we played bad football. I think we played good football. But something was always missing, and that was the case today as well."

Germany entered the match as Group E winner, while Paraguay ended Germany's previously perfect World Cup penalty shootout record.

The Arsenal forward said the players had to take responsibility for another early exit.

"Now we need to look at ourselves and ask what we can do better. We're all professional footballers, and we represent such a great football nation. When you get eliminated so early, you have to question yourselves," said the 27-year-old.

Nagelsmann echoed the opinion, saying Germany had simply not done enough to progress.

"I'm disappointed. In the end, it just wasn't enough to beat this opponent," he said.

The 38-year-old coach said his side lost control of the game after conceding Paraguay's opener and failed to make the most of its chances.

"We tried many different things. We brought on fresh players, and the boys really gave everything. We should have scored much earlier and created more chances."

Despite the early exit, Nagelsmann said he wanted to remain in charge.

"Yes," he said when asked whether he intended to continue as head coach. "I would like to continue."
