The government has pledged to strengthen support for girls' football following Uganda's triumph at the 2026 CECAFA U-17 Women's Championship.

State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang made the commitment on Thursday while hosting the Teen Cranes at a luncheon held at Four Points by Sheraton Kampala in recognition of their achievement.

Ogwang congratulated the players, coaches, and FUFA officials, saying the team's success reflects the progress being made in youth football development across the country.

"On behalf of the Government of Uganda, I congratulate you for winning this very important competition. Football development in this country is on the right trajectory, and seeing these young players achieve success at this stage of their careers is a clear indication that the future is bright," Ogwang said.

He said the government will continue investing in programmes that identify and develop young talent, especially among girls.

The minister also urged FUFA to strengthen the link between school and club football to ensure young players continue their development after completing school.

"One of the key challenges is ensuring these players continue developing after excelling at school level. We need sustainable competitions and structures that allow them to remain competitive while pursuing their education and football careers," he said.

Ogwang pledged government support towards initiatives aimed at expanding girls' football competitions and improving talent development pathways.

He also revealed plans to recommend that the Teen Cranes be hosted by President Yoweri Museveni in recognition of their achievement.

"When a national team wins an international competition, it is important that the achievement is formally recognised. These players deserve appreciation and motivation for bringing honour to the country," he added.

The minister called on schools and parents to support young athletes, noting that football has become an important career opportunity for talented girls.

During the function, Ogwang awarded Teen Cranes captain and tournament Most Valuable Player Shadia Nabirye a personal cash reward of Shs5 million.

"We have the tournament MVP here. I will personally provide Shs5 million from my own pocket as a Member of Parliament and Minister. You are one of the best assets we have to market and promote Ugandan football," he said.

The Teen Cranes retained the CECAFA U-17 Women's Championship title after an impressive campaign, underlining Uganda's growing strength in women's football.

Ogwang praised the players for making the country proud and assured them of continued government support as they pursue their football careers.

"My daughters, continue working hard and representing Uganda with pride. Government will continue to support your growth and development as athletes and as future ambassadors of our country," he said.

The Teen Cranes won the CECAFA U-17 Women's Championship with goals from Justine Ayerango, Brenda Nassaka, and Flavia Yagala sealing a 3-0 victory over hosts Tanzania.

Uganda finished the tournament unbeaten, scoring 26 goals and conceding none across five matches (5 wins, 26 goals scored, 0 conceded).
