KAMPALA - As the pilgrimage to Namugongo ahead of Uganda Martyrs Day gathers momentum, the Police have urged them to maintain disciplined formations while trekking.

Addressing journalists at Police headquarters in Naguru, Kampala city, on Monday, May 19, 2025, Police spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma said the journey has so far proceeded without any major incidents and attributed the calm to increased vigilance by both security personnel and the pilgrims themselves.

“We are glad that since the pilgrimage started, we have not recorded any serious accidents or threats,” Kituuma said.

“We appeal to motorists to exercise patience and caution as they share roads with the pilgrims moving along the major highways.”

Kituuma urged pilgrims to trek only during daylight hours when they are clearly visible to motorists. He further advised that pilgrims should walk in “single pipe formations” – lining up in single file – rather than extended side-by-side groups, which pose greater risks on busy roads.

“In single file, pilgrims leave enough space for vehicles to pass safely. This formation significantly reduces the chances of accidents,” he noted.

He added that police across all districts are working together to ensure a smooth and incident-free journey.

“The pilgrims are being escorted by police officers, and each team is handed over to the next district command to ensure continuous monitoring.”

Kituuma also called on pilgrims to use only designated rest points and to inform the nearest police units upon arrival.

Uganda Martyrs Day is commemorated annually on June 3 in memory of the 45 Christian converts who were killed for their faith between 1885 and 1887. The pilgrimage draws tens of thousands from Uganda and neighbouring countries.
