Vice President Maj (Retired) Jessica Alupo has urged the people of Teso to fully support and embrace the Teso Cattle Rehabilitation Program.
The rehabilitation committee, under her leadership, is currently engaging with various stakeholders to determine the best way to implement the presidential directive to provide each household in Teso with two to five cows.
During a meeting with the Teso rehabilitation committee on Thursday, security leaders from the sub-region proposed that households receive shs 5 million in cash instead of actual cattle, which equates to five cows.
In her remarks on Friday while meeting with the Iteso Cultural Union team in Eneku village, Alupo emphasised the importance of everyone in Teso embracing this initiative, clarifying that it is not designed to disadvantage anyone.
She also encouraged members of the opposition to engage in discussions and contribute to the successful implementation of this program.
Her comment came days after there were political criticisms from some opposition leaders in Teso regarding the program.
George William Okoit, a mobiliser for the National Unity Platform (NUP) in Soroti, dismissed the initiative, claiming that critical voices like Elijah Okupa, Papras Imodot, Julius Ochen, and representatives from Teso Animal and Property Claimants’ Organisation (TAPCO) were excluded from the consultations.
However, the Vice President has repeatedly stressed that the consultations, which are set to conclude on Sunday, September 14, will include a wide range of participants.
Attendees will comprise Teso MPs, LC5 District Chairpersons and their councillors, NRM District Chairpersons, Chief Administrative Officers, District Veterinary Officers, and LC3 Chairpersons.
Leaders from the Kumam cultural heritage, religious representatives from different denominations and petitioners, and their legal advisors will also join the conversation.
Additionally, there will be input from various special interest groups, including women, youth, individuals with disabilities, veterans, local entrepreneurs, boda boda leaders, and four opinion leaders from each county.
On Saturday, September 6, 2025, the rehabilitation committee will engage with the Kumam Cultural Heritage, followed by a meeting with boda boda leaders on Sunday and others afterwards.
On September 15, 2025, the committee will finalise a report aimed at the president, which will be presented on September 18.
