The Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) is set to hold its second edition of the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Inter-Forces Drill Competition 2026, a showcase of military discipline, precision, and professionalism that will bring together the country's top units at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in Kampala.

The high-level competition, an initiative of the CDF Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, is scheduled to take place from Saturday, August 22 - 25, 2026, to build on the success of the inaugural edition in May last year.

Addressing the press at Uganda Media Centre on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, Col Henry Obbo, the Deputy Defence Public Information Officer, said 40 teams and more than 1,400 participants that are drawn from all UPDF branches and services, shall showcase skills.

“Junior, senior and warrant officers together with other ranks will showcase sword and crop drills, pace sticks, cane sticks and foot drills. Five top teams will also perform freestyle drill displays, blending Ugandan cultural heritage with military tradition and highlighting the UPDF’s identity,” Obbo said.

This edition shall not only present traditional individual and team drill routines, but also introduce creative elements such as theme-based drills, formation changes, synchronised displays, music integration, story-telling and dance elements, he observed. “Through these innovations, the competition seeks to promote excellence and precision in military drill, enhance operational readiness and strengthen cooperation and friendship among branches and units,” Obbo emphasised.

CDF to award winners

CDF Gen. Kainerugaba is expected to award winners at the grand finale, with successful teams and individuals presented with best drill team, best drill commander and special recognition for innovation and cultural integration.

For the last few months, drill teams from across the UPDF's services and formations have been undergoing rigorous inspection and assessment ahead of the showdown at Kololo with the Special Forces Command, Motorised Infantry, Air Force and Marine in High Gear.

Col Obbo urged total concentration and warned against indiscipline. “Do not relax. Competition is not just about participating; it demands total concentration, discipline and determination,” he insisted.

He cautioned the teams against alcoholism and other forms of misconduct that could affect physical and mental readiness, emphasising that discipline remains the foundation of military excellence.

“While the competition is judged on collective performance, success depends on every individual's commitment and ability to execute drills in perfect coordination,” Obbo stated.

In the inaugural edition, the elite formation won two trophies and emerged best in the Mastery (Showmanship) Drill category, while the Internal Security Organisation (ISO) was crowned overall champion.
