Security forces have recovered a submachine gun following an exchange of fire with an armed warrior during a joint operation in Karenga District.

The incident occurred on August 17, 2026, when personnel from the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) Kawalakol Detach, working alongside the Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces (UPDF), conducted a targeted foot patrol in the Kakem Mining Area, Kalele Village, Kawalakol sub-county.

According to Mike Longole, the Mt. Moroto/ASTU regional police spokesperson, the operation was conducted at about 6:00am, in an area identified as a hideout for armed warriors accused of terrorising miners and residents.

During the patrol, the joint security team reportedly encountered an armed man in the bush.

Police said the suspect opened fire after spotting the officers and attempted to flee.

The security team returned fire, injuring the suspect, who managed to escape into the bush.

A search of the area led to the recovery of a submachine gun, which the suspect is believed to have abandoned while fleeing.

The firearm, bearing registration number 0426 and bolt number NI 1817, has been secured as an exhibit and will undergo ballistic analysis as investigations continue.

Security forces have since intensified operations in the area in an effort to locate the injured suspect and other armed individuals believed to be operating in the area.

The operations include increased patrols and community engagements aimed at protecting miners, residents and preventing further attacks.

Security authorities have appealed to members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious individuals, particularly anyone with gunshot wounds who may seek medical treatment in the area.
