The Chief of Staff, Land Forces of the Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces (UPDF), Maj. Gen. Chris Bagonza, has commissioned the newly completed infrastructure projects at the First Infantry Division headquarters in Kakiri, Wakiso District.

The UPDF, in a statement released on Friday, July 31, said the commissioned projects include 36 housing units and a new quarter guard, all constructed by the UPDF Engineering Brigade as part of ongoing efforts to improve soldiers' welfare and enhance military infrastructure.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Maj Gen Bagonza thanked the President of Uganda and Commander-in-Chief of the UPDF, Yoweri Museveni, for prioritising the construction of accommodation for soldiers.

"These houses will help soldiers who have been renting outside the barracks reduce their expenditure, as they now have a place to stay," Bagonza said.

He commended the UPDF Engineering Brigade for delivering quality work, describing the construction as highly professional.

Bagonza noted that improved infrastructure enables soldiers to live within the barracks alongside their commanders, strengthen command and control, and enhance operational effectiveness.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by the Commander of the 1st Infantry Division, Brig. Gen. Fred Mwesigye, as well as officers and staff of the division.

CDF promise

Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has prioritised enhancing the living and working conditions of UPDF personnel, focusing on salary enhancements, housing expansion, upgraded healthcare and education, and strict anti-corruption measures, which have earned public commendation from President  Museveni.

On July 9, 2026, President Museveni commended the CDF, Gen Kainerugaba, and his UPDF leadership team for making significant strides in improving the infrastructure and overall welfare of Uganda’s soldiers.

The President made the remarks during the pass-out ceremony of recruits at the Basic Military Training School in Kaweweta.
