Ex-Speaker Among grateful to President Museveni for releasing her
Former Speaker Anita Among has thanked President Museveni for ordering her release from house arrest after 100 days, saying she is ready to resume serving her Bukedea constituents.

Former Speaker of the 11th Parliament Anita Among has expressed gratitude to President Yoweri Museveni for granting her mercy and ordering her release from house arrest.
Among also thanked the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, for exercising professionalism throughout the period of 100 days when the Special Forces Command (SFC) soldiers were guarding her home.
“I take this opportunity to thank the Almighty God for the gift of life and freedom. My profound and heartfelt appreciation goes to His Excellency, President @KagutaMuseveni, for his unmatched parental grace and decision to grant me mercy,” Among posted today (August 26).
Among added; “I also extend my gratitude to the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, for his professionalism throughout this period. As the Woman MP for Bukedea, I look forward to continuing my work for my constituents and standing firm with our revolutionary leadership.”
President Museveni on August 25, directed the CDF to release former Speaker from house arrest. House arrest is a legal measure that confines a person to their residence as an alternative to imprisonment.
Gen. Kainerugaba, in a post on his X platform, confirmed the development, saying, “Mzee (President Museveni) has also instructed me to release Among from house arrest. We shall do that as well.”
Asked whether the release was temporary to enable Among seek medical treatment, Alaka clarified that it was not for that purpose. “No, no, permanently,” he said.
Alaka welcomed the President’s decision, saying Among’s legal team was grateful for the intervention. “We are very grateful that the President has agreed to release her. The rest, let’s wait and see,” he said.
New Vision also asked Alaka whether the assets and accounts that had been seized or frozen during the investigations would be returned following the decision to release her, but Alaka declined to discuss those details. "Well, let's wait and see," he said.
Sources confirmed that the Special Forces Command (SFC) soldiers, who were camped at Among’s home in Nakasero and Kigo, left the residences today morning following the directive.
This will be a big sigh of relief for Among, who has been under house arrest for three months now following a raid on her residences by the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers in the wee hours of Saturday morning (May 16, 2026).
In May this year, armed UPDF soldiers raided the former speakers’ homes and disarmed all her guards, paving way for a search by the joint security forces.
Museveni ordered the graft agencies to investigate accumulation of moveable and immovable assets linked directly to Among and all suspected associates; probe all foreign and domestic bank accounts, financial transfers, offshore entities, trusts, shell companies connected to Among or her associates; probe the procurement process, parliamentary expenditure, inflated contracts, commissions.
The president also ordered the probe on the acquisition, financing, importation and transportation, registration and ownership of the luxury vehicles linked to Among and her associates, potential abuse of office, conflict of interest, tax evasion, money laundering, sanctions evasion.
The president also directed the graft agencies to investigate any public officers, legislators; accounting officers, contractors, businessperson, relatives, associates, lawyers who have participated in, facilitated, concealment of beneficial ownership, probe any evidence of intimidation, destruction of records, interference with witnesses among others.
Following the directive, seven staff in Parliament, who included Chris Obore, the Director of Communications and Public Affairs at the Parliament of Uganda were arrested and charged with corruption, financial loss exceeding and money laundering related to corporate social responsibility funds at Parliament.
Obore is jointly charged with Parliament’s Director of Human Resource Daniel Adilo, Executive Secretary in the Office of the Speaker Leonard Okema, Principal Research Officer Rajab Kaaya Ssemalulu, Principal Protocol Officer Emmanuel Emuron Okwi, Capacity Development Officer Vincent Otebata, Uganda Parliamentary SACCO (Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisation) Chief Executive Officer Methods Murebe and Office Supervisor Stella Itute, who was charged in absentia.
The Inspectorate of Government alleges that the accused embezzled billions of shillings from Parliament and caused a financial loss of more than 27.2 billion shillings through funds earmarked for donations and corporate social responsibility programmes.
Six of the accused, including Obore, Okema, Adilo, Murebe and Otebata, also face money laundering charges involving sh10.89b, which prosecutors alleged were proceeds of crime.
