Two staff members of NewLife Secondary School in Luwero town have been arrested following a Tuesday (June 16) incident in which a student died of beatings allegedly inflicted on him by one of the teachers.

The victim, identified as Nicholas Nakibinge, a senior four student at NewLife secondary school, is said to have been beaten into a coma before he was rushed to Luweero Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The medical personnel at the hospital attributed the student's death to internal bleeding.

According to the Savannah Regional police spokesman, Samuel Twineamazima, those arrested following the incident include Keny Mubiru, the school warden and Margaret Akisa, a teacher at the school.

Twineamazima said the police were by press time still hunting for another teacher, called Abraham Mukalazi, who is said to have administered the beatings before he fled the school.

A sombre mood hangs over the school as police stormed the premises to carry out investigations.

The police had cordoned off one of the classrooms as a scene of crime by the time our reporter visited the school at around midday today.

The top school administrators, including the headteacher, were hiding while the few teachers and non-academic staff present declined to speak to the press.

But, one of the school directors, Paul Mukungu, admitted that the victim was caned. However, Mukungu said the victim was already in poor health by the time the teacher caned him.

The senior four class was completely empty, as students did not turn up on Wednesday, reportedly due to shock.

A classmate of the deceased student, who preferred to remain anonymous, said Nakibinge had spent the previous week in hospital over an undisclosed ailment.

The student said that after being caned, Nakibinge collapsed and developed foam in his mouth, prompting the panicking school authorities to rush him to Luwero Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The development comes at a time when the Government outlawed caning and any other form of corporal punishment in schools.
