Police in Luweero have arrested five suspects in connection with a Monday (June 15) morning incident in which a mob burnt two suspected cattle thieves to death and later set their motorbike on fire.

The incident took place at around 4:00am at Mabuye Trading Centre, Kamira sub-county, in Bamunanika County.

The deceased have been identified as Henry Matovu and Dan Sebuuma, both residents of Kamira Town Council in Luweero.

Those who have been arrested in connection with the mob attack include: Stephen Kuteesa Sande, Solomon Kizito, Abel Tugume, Shafiq Swahib, and Aaron Tumuhebwa.

According to Savannah Regional Police spokesperson Sam Twiineamazima, preliminary investigations indicate that the arrested suspects and others still at large intercepted their alleged victims who were riding on a motorbike before lynching and burning them to death. The group later abandoned the charred bodies in the middle of the road.

According to Twiineamazima, the mob also burnt the dead victims' motorbike, registration number UDU 118A, to ashes before fleeing the scene for fear of being arrested.

Twiineamazima said that after learning about the incident, police deployed a team of detectives and Scene of Crime officers who collected evidence with the help of a police dog.

The police also recovered several exhibits from the scene, including blood-stained items, sticks and bricks believed to have been used in the attack.

The bodies were transported to Luweero Hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations as investigations continue.

Police condemned the attack and urged members of the public to hand over suspects to authorities rather than resorting to mob justice.

The development comes a few days after a mob killed a national team and Black Pirates rugby player, Sydney Gongodyo, on June 5, 2026, at Upper Naguru East Road in Kampala.

Police have since arrested several suspects, and four of them have been charged with the murder. Police have also launched a hunt for five more suspects linked to the murder.

Police spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma on Monday (June 15) told journalists at the police headquarters in Naguru, Kampala, that the five other suspects being sought were captured on Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras participating in the assault of Gongodyo.

“The five were riding on bodabodas, and we are looking for them. They will also be charged with the murder of Gongodyo,” he said.
