Tibatemwa-Ekirikubinza elected African judges forum deputy chair

Justice Lillian Tibatemwa-Ekirikubinza has been elected deputy chairperson of the African Judges and Jurists Forum (AJJF) board.

The AJJF Secretariat announced the development in a statement on Monday, June 22.

It said Tibatemwa-Ekirikubinza, a distinguished jurist and academic, brings extensive experience in judicial leadership, legal scholarship and a strong commitment to advancing the rule of law across Africa.

"Her election reflects AJJF’s dedication to strengthening judicial independence, promoting rule of law and fostering collaboration among judges and jurists on the continent," the statement said.

Tibatemwa-Ekirikubinza reaffirmed her commitment to supporting AJJF’s mission.

She was quoted in the statement as saying the Forum is a vital platform for dialogue and innovation in African jurisprudence.

"I look forward to working with colleagues to deepen our collective impact on justice and governance.”

Former Chief Justice of Kenya, Dr Willy Mutunga, who is also president of AJJF, welcomed her election.

He noted that Tibatemwa-Ekirikubinza’s expertise and vision will enhance the Forum’s role in addressing pressing issues of justice, democracy and human rights.

The Forum congratulated her and said it looks forward to her leadership in advancing its objectives.

AJJF is a continental platform that brings together judges, jurists and legal scholars to promote judicial independence and advance the rule of law within the context of Africa’s development.

Justice Tibatemwa-Ekirikubinza holds a PhD in Law from the University of Copenhagen. She joined the Ugandan judiciary in July 2013.
