The Inspectorate of Government (IG) has directed the Lira city clerk to interdict statistician Denis Okello Ayini, pending the determination of a case in which he is accused of uttering forged documents.

According to a press release issued by the IG on June 22, Ayini was arraigned before the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Lira under criminal case number 407 of 2026.

He is charged with uttering forged documents contrary to Sections 328 and 324 of the Penal Code Act. The offence attracts a maximum sentence of three years' imprisonment, on conviction.

The accused denied the charges, and investigations into the matter are still ongoing.

The Inspectorate said the directive to interdict the official is in line with Article 230(2) of the Constitution and Section 13(6) of the Inspectorate of Government Act, Cap. 32, which empower the Inspector General of Government to issue orders and directions deemed necessary in the course of carrying out his or her duties.

“Public interest requires that Ayini be stopped from exercising the powers and functions of his office while the criminal proceedings against him is ongoing in the courts of law,” the press release reads in part.
