Four people, including three police officers and a boda boda rider, have been arrested to assist investigations into the shooting to death of a suspected habitual phone thief in Bukwo District.

The incident is being investigated under CRB 312/2026 at Bukwo Police Station following the death of the suspect on August 8, 2026.

According to a police report, Police Constables; Moses Awio and Emmanuel Oluka attached to Greek River Police Station, were sent to Alalam Police Station to arrest a suspect wanted in connection with phone theft.

The two officers were reportedly accompanied by a boda boda rider identified as Jonnah Kiplangat, a resident of Konamasiwa Village, Greek Sub-county in Kween District.

Upon reaching Alalam Police Station, the officers reportedly learnt that the suspect had moved to Brim sub-county. The officer in charge of Alalam police station referred them to the officer in charge of Brim, who assigned Police Constable Fred Mwesi to accompany them in the operation.

The police report, which forms part of the investigations, indicates that the team later traced the suspect to Chemusebe village where they found him washing his motorcycle.

Police said the suspect spotted the officers and fled, abandoning the motorcycle.

The officers reportedly recovered the motorcycle and pushed it to the sub-county chairperson’s premises for safe custody.

Shortly afterwards, the suspect’s mother arrived and claimed the motorcycle. Police said the suspect then returned armed with a panga and a stone.

According to the report, the suspect allegedly threatened to harm the police officers despite his mother’s attempts to restrain him.

The suspect reportedly advanced towards the officers and hit one of them on the head with a stone.

The Police officers fired shots into the air in an attempt to scare him away, but he allegedly continued advancing towards them while wielding a panga.

The officers then fired at the suspect, injuring him. He was rushed to Bukwo General Hospital for treatment but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on arrival.

The incident was subsequently registered and is being investigated, with detectives seeking to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting and determine whether the officers acted within the law in using their firearms.

The scene was visited and documented by the Bukwo District Police Commander, District Criminal Investigations Department officers, the District Scene of Crime Officer and other police personnel.

As part of the ongoing investigations, Police Constables Awio, Oluka and Mwesi, together with boda boda rider Kiplangat, were arrested to assist police in establishing what transpired during the operation.

The body of the deceased was conveyed to Bukwo General Hospital mortuary, where it is being held pending a postmortem examination.

Police said inquiries are ongoing.
