LIRA CITY — Police have arrested a 16-year-old teenager after his 40-year-old paternal uncle was allegedly hacked to death with a panga following a land dispute in Lira City.
According to Police, the dispute arose after the two family members failed to agree over cutting of trees along a land boundary in Lira City.
The suspect, whose identity was withheld because he is a minor, allegedly hacked his uncle, Moses Solex Nam, resulting into his death. The two were residents of Ongica 'A' Cell, Barapwo Ward in Lira City.
According to Patrick Jimmy Okema, the North Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson, the incident happened at about 12:40pm on October 14, 2026, when the deceased reportedly picked a quarrel with the suspect over the cutting of trees along a land boundary.
"The disagreement escalated into a physical fight, during which the suspect, who was reportedly armed with a panga, cut the deceased on the throat, killing him instantly," Okema said in a statement today (October 15).
Okema said the incident was reported to police by Jimmy Ogal, the area local council 1 chairperson, prompting the registration of a murder case to facilitate investigations.
Police visited and documented the scene with the help of the Scene of Crime Officer (SOCO). "The body was retrieved and taken to Lira Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination. The alleged murder weapon was also recovered from the scene and retained as an exhibit to aid investigations," Okema said.
Police established that the deceased was the suspect’s paternal uncle.
Okema condemned the incident and urged members of the public to exercise restraint when resolving disputes. He also encouraged peaceful approaches such as dialogue, mediation and forgiveness instead of violence.
He warned that resorting to violence could lead to tragic and irreversible consequences.
