The government is set to commission the newly built Katonga Bridge on the Kampala–Masaka Highway today (Saturday).

This is in an effort to restore the critical transport link following the collapse of the original bridge in May 2023.

The bridge will be commissioned by transport minister Fred Byamukama.

According to the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, traffic at the bridge will be temporarily halted for approximately 20 minutes during the ceremony to ensure the safety of guests and other road users.

In a statement, directorate spokesperson Michael Kananura urged motorists to exercise patience and follow instructions from traffic police officers deployed at the site.

Motorists were also cautioned against improper overtaking and attempting to bypass other vehicles, with police emphasising the need for lane discipline and cooperation to minimise congestion.

The commissioning follows the construction of a replacement bridge after the original Katonga Bridge collapsed in May 2023, disrupting transport along one of the major routes connecting Kampala to Masaka and other parts of southwestern Uganda.

The new bridge has since been fully reopened to normal traffic, allowing motorists to use the crossing as the government prepares to formally commission the infrastructure.

The Kampala–Masaka Highway is an important transport corridor for passengers, traders and businesses travelling between Kampala and southwestern Uganda.

The restoration of the crossing is therefore significant for maintaining connectivity along the route.
