Three Members of Parliament (MPs) have been officially nominated to contest for the position of Deputy Speaker of Uganda’s 12th Parliament for the 2026–2031 term.
The candidates are: Hoima City Woman MP Asinansi Nyakato, who is standing on the People's Front for Freedom ticket; Dokolo Woman MP Sarah Aguti, who is a Uganda People's Congress candidate; and Ruhinda North MP Thomas Tayebwa, who is representing the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.
Another NRM candidate, Godfrey Kaguta Aine (Mawogola North) got nominated by Kalungu East MP Yusuf Kiruluta Nkeretanyi. However, Aine's nomination could not stand because no one seconded him as required by the rules.
The election is taking place this afternoon, Monday, 25 May 2026, at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in Kampala.
Proceedings are being presided over by the newly-elected Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Oboth-Oboth.
The ruling NRM party has officially backed Tayebwa’s candidature, giving him a significant advantage in the race due to the party’s numerical strength in Parliament.
President Yoweri Museveni and Chief Justice Dr Flavian Zeija are among the dignitaries attending the elections that started today morning at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.
