The election of the speaker (Jacob Oboth-Oboth) and deputy speaker took place on Monday, May 25, 2026, at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in Kampala.
West Budama Central MP Jacob Oboth-Oboth was elected Speaker of Uganda’s 12th Parliament for the 2026–2031 term after a vote held at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in Kampala on Monday, May 25, 2026.
Oboth-Oboth secured a commanding victory with 441 votes, defeating Democratic Party president and Laroo-Pece Division MP Norbert Mao, who garnered 15 votes, and Jinja East Division MP Paul Mwiri of the National Unity Platform (NUP), who polled 60 votes.
Ruhinda North Member of Parliament (MP), Thomas Tayebwa, won the race for the position of deputy speaker of parliament for the 2026–2031 term, beating two other candidates: Hoima City Woman MP Asinansi Nyakato (45 votes), who stood on the People's Front for Freedom ticket; and Dokolo Woman MP Sarah Agutito (14 votes), to the position after he polled 457 votes. Tayebwa held the same position in the 11th Parliament.
