Speakership race: NRM MPs endorse Oboth-Oboth, Tayebwa

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) caucus has endorsed outgoing defence minister Jacob Oboth-Oboth and the Member of Parliament (MP) for West Budama Central to hold the party flag for the position of the Speaker of Parliament.

The same caucus also endorsed Thomas Tayebwa, MP for Ruhinda North, for the position of deputy speaker. Tayebwa has been the deputy speaker in the 11th parliament.

The endorsement came after all the other 18 aspiring candidates for Speaker and Deputy Speaker positions stepped down for Oboth-Oboth and Tayebwa during a meeting held at State House, Entebbe, on Sunday, May 24, 2026.

On Monday, May 25, 2026, the 12th Parliament will hold its first sitting at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, where the Speaker and Deputy Speaker will be elected.
