KAMPALA - The Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development has reported positive results from National Cleaning Day, with reports from Community Development Officers indicating improvements in environmental sanitation, public health conditions and the cleanliness of towns and trading centres across Uganda.

The Ministry says the initiative, observed on the last Saturday of every month, demonstrates the positive impact of collective action and civic responsibility. It is calling for increased public participation to consolidate these gains.

In a letter dated October 28th, 2026, signed by Acting Permanent Secretary Alex Asiimwe, the Ministry commended local authorities for successfully initiating and sustaining the monthly cleaning activities.

“This progress is both commendable and encouraging, demonstrating the positive impact of collective action and civic responsibility,” the Ministry said in the letter.

Building on these results, The Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development has asked the Executive Director of Kampala Capital City Authority, all Chief Administrative Officers and Town Clerks to provide active leadership and strengthen community mobilisation. The Ministry’s mandate includes mobilising communities broadly, with specific attention to women, youth and other vulnerable groups.

According to the letter, reports from Community Development Officers highlight the following benefits of National Cleaning Day:

  • Improved environmental sanitation across participating communities.
  • Better public health conditions reported by Community Development Officers.
  • Improved cleanliness of towns and trading centres.

The Ministry wants to build on this progress by strengthening community ownership, encouraging lasting changes in sanitation practices and making environmental stewardship a core national value. It also links a culture of cleanliness and active citizen participation to the national development agenda.

According to the letter, the Office of the Prime Minister developed National Guidelines for National Cleaning Day to guide implementation across the country. Under these guidelines, The Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development is responsible for community mobilisation, promoting positive behavioural change and integrating cleaning activities into community development programmes.

The Ministry is also mandated to champion occupational safety and health measures to protect participants during cleaning exercises.

Local leaders have been asked to supervise and support Community Development Officers within their jurisdictions and ensure the timely submission of monthly progress reports highlighting achievements, challenges and recommendations.

The Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development is calling for stronger leadership and wider community participation to sustain the gains from the National Cleaning Day and strengthen a culture of cleanliness across the country.
