Soroti youth turn up in numbers for UPDF recruitment

Hundreds of young people from Soroti district and Soroti city have turned up for a two-day Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) recruitment exercise at Soroti city sports grounds.
The exercise, which started on Wednesday (August 12), has attracted applicants seeking to join the army under both the regular and professional categories.
The candidates arrived with academic documents, national identity cards and other required documents for verification.
UPDF public information officer for Team Eight, which covers the Teso and Bukedi regions, Lieutenant Nasser Mene, said the exercise is targeting previously shortlisted applicants under the regular recruitment category, as well as professionals with specialised skills.
Mene said applicants will first undergo verification of their academic and personal documents before proceeding to the next stages of recruitment.
He said 97 candidates were shortlisted from Soroti district and Soroti city, with 57 slots allocated to Soroti district and 29 to Soroti city.
Mene added that successful candidates will report to their respective training schools three days after recruitment.
Mene said applicants will first undergo verification of their academic and personal documents before proceeding to the next stages of recruitment.

Meanwhile, Soroti resident district commissioner Haji Imran Muluga warned applicants against bribery, urging them not to give money to anyone promising to influence their selection.
The assistant resident city commissioner of Soroti, Stephen Omoding Eupa, also cautioned parents against giving money to people who claim they can secure recruitment slots for their children.
The recruitment exercise is being conducted across the country as the UPDF seeks to enlist eligible Ugandans into its ranks.
