Residents of Naminya South Zone in Njeru Municipality, Buikwe district were still in shock after a private security guard slid off a stone and fell into the River Nile and died instantly.
Preliminary information given to the police indicated that Cosmas Esiru, 22, a resident of UEB Quarters, Njeru Central, Njeru Municipality and attached to Wolves Security Group on Saturday, January 06, 2024, went with his brother to the shores of R. Nile at Naminya village to wash his clothes.
It is alleged that at around 9:00 am, he slid and fell in water as he walked along the shores and died instantly. His brother who had moved with him informed Marine police who started searching the body and were able to retrieve it and handed it over to the police at Njeru.
According to Hellen Butoto, the Ssezibwa region Public Relations Officer, the incident was reported two days after, on January 8, 2023, by one Samuel Adipa, 30, a private security guard with Securex Agencies Uganda Limited and a resident of Kimaka Zone Northern division Jinja City.
Butoto said the police from Njeru were also investigating the circumstances under which the deceased drowned.
The body was handed over to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for post a postmortem and later handed over to relatives for burial.
