Drowning cases in River Nile overwhelm Kamdini police

Olet was reported to have drowned at Dicunyi landing site in Nora village, Juma parish, Kamdini subcounty, while swimming towards the Karuma Hydropower Station bridge, about 1,000 metres away.

Drowning incidents in the River Nile are increasing in the Kamdini area of Oyam district, with police reporting 12 cases involving youths.

Olet was reported to have drowned at Dicunyi landing site in Nora village, Juma parish, Kamdini subcounty, while swimming towards the Karuma Hydropower Station bridge, about 1,000 metres away.
Moses Oyepa, the LC1 chairperson of Nora village, confirmed the incident, saying it occurred around midday.
The case was reported to Kamdini Police Station under SD 12/09/20/2026, and investigations are ongoing.
Oyepa said police, the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and local communities were working together to search for Olet's body.
Richard Ekuka, the LC1 chairperson of Dicunyi village in Juma parish, said the information about the incident was received around midday and that efforts to recover the body were ongoing.

He urged fishermen and other members of the community to avoid going into deeper waters.
