Uganda planning to relocate Cairo embassy

The Ugandan Government plans to relocate its embassy in Cairo to another city in Egypt known as New Cairo.
According to official information, the metropolis was established in 2000 as part of Egypt’s strategic effort to alleviate chronic congestion in Greater Cairo by decentralising population and economic activity.
Foreign affairs ministry permanent secretary Vincent Bagiire disclosed the development on September 2, 2026, while appearing before members of Parliament on the Public Accounts Committee (Central), chaired by Patrick Guma-Oshabe Nsamba (Kassanda North, NUP).
“We are working on the relocation from Cairo to the New Cairo, where we were given land, and we have prepared a Cabinet paper to allow us to perhaps sell the property that we have in Cairo. To be able to use those resources to construct where the Government of Uganda has been provided land in the new capital city of Egypt,” Bagiire revealed.
“There was an offer by the Government of Egypt to relocate to the new city. You are aware our embassy is located in a place I don’t want to talk about now. How far have you gone?” Mudiimi posed.
Uganda-Egypt diplomatic ties
Uganda’s diplomatic mission in Egypt is located at 66 Road 10, Maadi, Cairo, a residential area. The embassy also caters for three other countries, namely Israel, Lebanon and Syria.
Over time, ties between the two countries, which share historical links through the River Nile, have faced challenges.
In 2023, trade between Uganda and Egypt stood at US$141 million (sh532.8 billion), with Egyptian exports to Uganda amounting to US$109 million (sh411.9 billion), while Uganda’s exports to Egypt amounted to US$32 million (sh120.9 billion), according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Uganda’s key exports to Egypt at the time included coffee and tea, dairy products, spices and raw tobacco. Egypt’s exports to Uganda included iron and steel, plastics, sugar and confectionery, cereals and pharmaceutical products.
Uganda’s exports to Egypt have been growing at an annualised rate of 25% since 2018.
During the same period, remittances from Egyptians working in Uganda stood at US$4.8 million (sh18.1 billion), while transfers from Ugandans in Egypt reached US$1 million (sh3.8 billion).
