President Museveni mourns husband to Tanzania's Suluhu

“It was with a lot of sadness that I received the bad news of the death of your dear husband, Mr. Hafidh Hassan. I extend my most heartfelt condolences, on behalf of the people of Uganda and my family and me, to Your Excellency, your family, and the People of Tanzania. Ever since I started knowing you as Vice-President of the United Republic of Tanzania and now as President, I have witnessed your love for your country and Africa and your dedication," Museveni noted.

Museveni said He and Suluhu have done a lot together in trade, citing the East African Oil Pipeline, the Murongo-Kyikagate mini-hydro station, the tarmac roads on the side of Tanzania, the transmission line from Masaka-Bukoba, the Standard Gauge Railway to Isaka and, eventually, to Uganda and beyond.

“The dedication you show must have been supported by your dear husband and family. I have met your son, Mr. Abdul, a few times.   It must, therefore, be a great loss to you. I pray that the Almighty God sees you through these dark days. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Museveni stated.

On Monday, September 7, Tanzania's Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi announced Hassan's death, saying he had been suffering from a heart condition. The 76-year-old died at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar.

President Suluhu and the first gentleman got married in 1978 and had three sons and a daughter.
