LUZIRA - The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Secretary General, Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong, has urged Uganda Prisons Service officers to become agents of wealth creation by using their leadership positions and professional influence to promote household incomes and community development.

Todwong made the call while addressing officers undertaking various command and leadership courses at the Uganda Prisons Academy and Training School in Luzira

The participants included officers pursuing the Intermediate Command and Staff Course, Junior Command and Staff Course, Senior Non-Commissioned Officers Course and Junior Non-Commissioned Officers Course.

He challenged the officers to look beyond their core security responsibilities and actively participate in income-generating activities, particularly commercial agriculture and manufacturing, to improve household incomes and contribute to national development.

"I encourage you to use your leadership to establish community challenges and work towards sustained solutions," Todwong said, urging the officers to become "agents of socioeconomic transformation."

On national unity, Todwong urged the officers to reject sectarianism and discrimination, saying individuals should be judged by their skills and contributions rather than their tribal or religious backgrounds.

He emphasised that poverty eradication begins at the household level and called on the officers to support government wealth creation initiatives, including the Parish Development Model (PDM), Emyooga and other empowerment programmes.

Todwong also cautioned against spending money on non-productive activities, particularly excessive celebrations and social events, instead encouraging disciplined saving and investment in productive ventures such as agriculture, education and income-generating enterprises.

He said peace and security were essential foundations for economic progress, noting that stability enables citizens to settle, conduct business and improve their livelihoods. He encouraged the officers to appreciate Uganda's transition from years of instability to the relative peace enjoyed today.

Todwong further identified corruption as a major obstacle to national progress and called on the officers to uphold integrity, discipline and accountability in executing their duties.
