Archbishop Samuel Kazimba Mugalu of the Church of Uganda has urged Anglican churches in Masindi Kitara Diocese to establish income-generating activities to boost their financial sustainability.

Kaziimba, who is on his farewell visit, addressed hundreds of residents, leaders and clergy at Masindi Kitara Diocese on November 6, 2026.

During the visit, he also officiated at the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a three-star diocesan hotel.

"As a church, we should have different income-generating activities because constantly begging is not sustainable. I am happy that we have had a groundbreaking for the three-star hotel for the diocese. This will help the church boost its income," Kaziimba stated.

Tapping into AFCON opportunities

Kaziimba challenged the people of Masindi and the wider Bunyoro region to capitalise on the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and take advantage of the business opportunities it would bring.

"Many guests are going to come due to AFCON. They will need plenty of food, good hotels, and guesthouses. Let's stop lamenting about poverty when there are so many opportunities to tap into," he urged.

Promoting unity

Kaziimba called on religious leaders across all denominations to uphold the spirit of the Uganda Joint Christian Council and the Inter-Religious Council of Uganda, emphasising the importance of unity and mutual support.

Preaching under the theme "Unity to God and Each Other," he warned against unnecessary conflicts and tribalism, saying tribal divisions had no place in Uganda.

"God is calling us to be united and to work together. Ensure that you walk with God because He is a great God. When we work together, move together, we shall achieve much," Kaziimba said.

He also cautioned families against domestic violence, which he said had caused lasting problems, including broken families, child-headed households, poverty and children being denied access to education.

"As I bid farewell, let's be one by working together. Let the church steer development. Let's love each other if there is to be progress," he appealed, adding that he was retiring to focus on mentorship and discipleship.

Kaziimba commended the people of Masindi for their hospitality, generosity and love during his visit, describing the reception he received as exceptional.

He also praised the leadership of Masindi Kitara Diocese for avoiding unnecessary disputes, saying that although it was one of Uganda's 39 dioceses, it had not been involved in any complaints.

The Archbishop said he would also devote his retirement to writing. He has already published two books, Empowering the Laity and Empowering the Followers to be Leaders.

He urged people in Masindi to pay greater attention to the boy child, saying many parents were neglecting boys, which he said contributed to the upbringing of irresponsible husbands.

"The biggest percentage of people in church are women; the biggest percentage of parents visiting their children are women. The only place you find a percentage of men is the prison and the bars, something which isn't good. Let's pay attention to the boy child also," he cautioned.

Bishop Joshua Kugonza of Masindi Kitara Diocese said the diocese had already embarked on several income-generating activities, including establishing a three-star hotel, promoting coffee growing in every household of church members and strengthening the education system in Church of Uganda-founded schools.

He added that the diocese also planned to transform Kabalega College into an independent institution to be known as Kabalega University.

Retired Masindi Kitara Diocese Bishop George William Kasangaki Asiimwe said the cathedral would always remember Kaziimba for the contributions he had personally made to the diocese.

Bujenje County MP Kenneth Kiiza Nyendwoha commended the Archbishop for his achievements during his tenure as head of the Church of Uganda.

"We shall always remember you for securing the Janan Luwum house and for preaching peace and unity, which you have personally practised," Nyendwoha stated.

Kabakumba Labwoni Masiko, a former information minister and chairperson of the Masindi Kitara Diocese Construction Committee, praised Kaziimba for establishing Family Television and working closely with the NRM government.
