President Museveni confirms promotions of UPDF generals

The promotions of generals, as well as of senior and junior officers, had been effected by the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

President Yoweri Museveni, who is also the Commander in Chief of Uganda's army (UPDF), has confirmed all the latest promotions of military officers, including generals.

The promotions of generals, as well as of senior and junior officers, had been effected by the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

Maj. Gen. Felix Kulayigye, the director of defence public information, released a statement on Saturday (March 8) on the development.

"The CDF/Senior Presidential Advisor on Special Operations is pleased to announce the confirmation and promotion of generals, senior officers and junior officers by His Excellency the President," said the statement.

"We congratulate the generals and the officers upon well-deserved promotions.”

Those promoted include:

▪️ Maj. Gen. Stephen Mugerwa, Commander of 1st Infantry Division of the UPDF

▪️ Maj. Gen. Paul Muhanguzi, Commander of 2nd Infantry Division

▪️ Maj. Gen. Felix Busizori, Commander of 4th Infantry Division

▪️ Maj. Gen. Keith Katungi, Commander of 5th Infantry Division

▪️ Maj. Gen. Felix Kulayigye

 

Mugerwa, Muhanguzi, Busizori and Katungi were promoted by the CDF from the rank of brigadier to major general on December 11, 2024.

Kulayigye was promoted to his new rank on January 28, 2025.

He said that acting Major Generals Charles Byanyima, Deus Sande and Daniel Kakono, who were promoted on March 5 this year were not part of this latest confirmation by President Museveni.

The above trio were promoted “in line with the new establishment and their flawless track records of excellent service".

The ranks in the UPDF include (from top), general, lieutenant general, major general, brigadier general, colonel, lieutenant colonel, major, captain, lieutenant, and second lieutenant.

In July last year, Museveni promoted 898 and confirmed 20 senior and junior officers of the UPDF. 

Five were promoted from the rank of colonel to brigadier, three from acting colonel to colonel, 15 from lieutenant colonel to colonel and three from acting lieutenant colonel to lieutenant colonel.

The promotions also included 10 from major to lieutenant colonel, 10 from acting major to major, 63 from captain to major, four from acting captain to captain, 155 from lieutenant to captain and 650 from second lieutenant to lieutenant.
