Police speak out on viral Kisekka market shooting video clip
In a statement released on Wednesday, Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) said they had taken note of the viral video circulating on social media showing armed security personnel firing shots into the air.

Police have broken the silence on the viral video showing armed men in civilian clothes who were captured while shooting in the air in downtown Kisekka market, explaining that these were security personnel and that the shooting was to help them flee from an alleged irate mob after carrying out arrests.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) said they had taken note of the viral video circulating on social media showing armed security personnel firing shots into the air.
“The incident occurred on Monday, July 20, 2026, at about 6:00pm in Nakivubo Cell, Nakasero III Ward, Kampala Central Business District. A team of security officers had gone to the original Kisekka Spare Centre in Kisekka Market to arrest suspected offenders,” the statement said.
Police revealed that during the operation, a group of individuals turned violent and attempted to obstruct the lawful arrest of the suspects.
“In order to disperse the unruly crowd and restore order, the officers fired warning shots in the air. The situation was subsequently brought under control, and the officers successfully arrested two suspects,” police stated.
The incident comes in the wake of a series of other operations targeting suspected criminals in and around Kampala in the wake of an increase in crimes.
While releasing the Uganda Police Force Annual Crime Report 2025 in April this year, Inspector General of Police Abas Byakagaba said a total of 196,405 cases were reported to Police compared to 218,715 in 2024, which represents a 10.2% reduction.
Out of the reported cases, 115,301 cases were submitted to the Office of the Director Public Prosecutions, from which 79,291 were taken to court.
Out of the 32 policing regions in Uganda, KMP South registered the highest number of cases with 13,950, followed by Rwizi with 13,416, KMP North with 13,340, North Kyoga with 12,728 and KMP East with 10,388.
At district/divisional level, Wakiso Police Division registered the highest number of cases with 3,177, followed by Luwero Police Station with 3,123, Mukono Police Division with 2,880, Tororo Police Station with 2,831 and Ntungamo Police Station with 2,825.
