Police in Mityana district have rescued several dogs from illegal dog care facilities during an intelligence-led operation conducted on June 12, 2026, in the areas of Kansuleti, Kasimbi and Bamunanika in Busimbi Division, Mityana Municipality.

According to Wamala Region Police spokesperson, Lameck Kigozi, the operation targeted illegal dog care houses that had become a source of concern among residents due to the manner in which the animals were being handled.

He explained that the condition of the dogs and the methods used to keep them had created fear and panic among community members.

"The manner in which they were handling these dogs raised fear and panic in the communities," he noted.

Police reported that some of the rescued dogs had visible injuries, including broken limbs and severed tails, while many appeared malnourished.

"Some of the rescued dogs had intentional injuries like broken limbs, cut off tails, and many appeared malnourished," SSP Kigozi stated.

Authorities also discovered that the animals had no vaccination records, posing a potential health risk to the public.

"They had no vaccination record, which made them even more dangerous to the public in the event of escape," he added.

The rescued dogs were handed over to Animal Lifeline Uganda, a registered non-governmental organisation with a holding facility in Kateete Cell, Kireku Ward, Busimbi Division.

According to police, the organisation's directors pledged to work closely with the district veterinary officer to vaccinate the animals and control their breeding before making them available for adoption.

"The directors assured us that they are going to work hand in hand with the district Veterinary officer to vaccinate them and control their breeding. They'll later invite members of the public to adopt them," SSP Kigozi said.

Police confirmed that three suspects arrested during the operation will be taken to court.

"The three suspects will be taken to court on charges related to cruelty to animals and any other charge as the Resident State Attorney may advise," SSP Kigozi said.

He further urged members of the public interested in caring for stray animals to follow the required legal procedures.
